The average price of a smartphone is now around 22,000 rupees ($269; £220), up from 15,000 rupees two years ago, according to IDC’s Navkendar Singh. For a market of its size, India is remarkably price sensitive: 80% of the devices sold here cost less than Rs 20,000. “This is a real cause for concern. The world’s second-largest mobile phone market has smartphone penetration that doesn’t come close to China, which has the largest market,” says Mr Singh.
